FAQ’s About Mexican Hammocks & Mayan Hammocks
For over 3000 years, Mayan hammocks provided superior comfort, security and relaxation.
The original Mayan hammocks were made from the woven bark of the “hamack” tree. A hammock provided a place for people to sit while socializing and for day to day living. Learn more here through the FAQ’s about hammocks.
Here are some of the common questions about Mayan hammocks:
What Are Mayan Hammocs Made of?
The body of the hammocks are hand-woven from 100% cotton with nylon braided ends for hanging and maximum strength.
How Long Will My Hammock Last?
Your Mayan hammock should last for many years. They should not be left outdoors for long periods of time or exposed to rain as a wet hammock can lead to the cotton threads to degrade.
What Is The Difference In Size?
The Single Mayan hammock sleeps one. The Queen size hammock is ideal as a couple’s hammock. The King size will sleep two to three comfortably and seat as many you can fit into it (six+). The Super King Jumbo is our largest and can hold te whole family. It’s also ideal for indoor or outdoor use.
How Should It Be Hung?
Mayan hammocks can be achored to a strong wall, tree, palmtree, sail boat etc. etc. Hang it so that the ends where it is tied are about 6 feet from the ground, so that it hangs down to a level between your knees and your hips. You can use rope, chain, strong cords for poles and trees. For a wood wall you can drill a heavy duty hook. For concrete walls you can do the same. It requires two rings mounted to walls or posts, two S-hooks, and two lengths of strong cord. You can purchase these items at any hardware store. Suspend the hammock to hang symmetrically, with both ends at the same height, using equal lengths of cord. We include an instruction sheet with every hammock. (Please also see our page on Mexican hammock hanging tips).
How Do I Use It?
To enter the Mayan hammock, you back up to it, pull the far side well above your head then lie back, pull in your feet and position yourself comfortably. To get out, simply lower your feet to the ground and stand up.
Is It Washable?
Yes, grasp each end loop and stretch the Mayan hammock to its full length. Bind the end cords and body at about six inch intervals to keep them from tangling. Place in a pillow case, and gently hand wash in cold water with mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly, remove binding strings and hang it stretched to dry.
How Do I Store It?
One way is to grasp the end loops and twist each in opposite directions until the entire length is twisted tightly, then hold it above your head, and it will spin and wrap around itself like a skein of knitting yarn.
